How to Get a Codice Fiscale (The Easy Way)"

How to Get a Codice Fiscale in Italy: A Step-by-Step Guide for Foreigners

If you are planning to move to Italy, work here, rent an apartment, or even buy a local SIM card, there is one Italian word you will hear over and over again: Codice Fiscale.

But what exactly is it, why do you need it, and how can you get one without losing your mind in Italian bureaucracy? Here is a complete, stress-free guide to getting your Italian tax code as a foreigner.

What is a Codice Fiscale?

The Codice Fiscale (pronounced co-dee-che fee-scah-leh) is the Italian tax code. It is a unique alphanumeric code made up of 16 characters based on your name, surname, date of birth, gender, and country of birth.

Think of it as the master key to your life in Italy. While it is technically for tax purposes, you cannot do almost anything official in Italy without it.

Why do you need it?

You will be asked for your Codice Fiscale when you want to:

Rent an apartment (long-term)

Open an Italian bank account

Sign a work contract

Get an Italian mobile phone number or set up home Wi-Fi

Register for the National Health Service (SSN)

Buy a car or scooter

How to Apply for a Codice Fiscale (Step-by-Step)

The good news is that getting a Codice Fiscale is actually free, and you don't necessarily have to wait until you land in Italy to get one! Here are the two main ways to apply:

Option 1: Apply Abroad via the Italian Consulate (Highly Recommended)

The easiest way to get your code is to apply before you leave your home country through the nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate.

Check the Consulate Website: Go to the website of the Italian Consulate in your jurisdiction and look for the "Codice Fiscale" section.

Download the Form: Fill out the AA4/8 application form (available on the Agenzia delle Entrate website or the consulate's page).

Submit Your Documents: Depending on the consulate, you can either email them your scanned application along with a copy of your passport/visa, or you may need to book an appointment.

Receive Your Code: The consulate will process it and email you an official PDF certificate with your unique tax code. This usually takes anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Option 2: Apply in Person in Italy

If you are already in Italy, you will need to visit the local tax office called the Agenzia delle Entrate.

Find your local office: Search for the nearest Agenzia delle Entrate office in your city.

Bring the required documents:

A completed AA4/8 Form (you can print it beforehand or get one at the desk).

Your valid Passport or official ID card.

A photocopy of your Passport bio-data page (and your Visa, if applicable).

Non-EU citizens: Bring your valid Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit) or the receipt showing you have applied for it.

Take a number and wait: Go to the office, take a ticket, and wait for your turn.

Get your certificate: The officer will input your details into the system and print out your official paper certificate right then and there.

💡 Pro Tips for a Smooth Application

Don't use online generators: There are many websites that can "calculate" what your Codice Fiscale will look like. While the calculation might be mathematically correct, it is not legally valid until registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate. Landlords and banks will verify your code in the official system, so make sure you get the real certificate.

Keep the paper safe: Italy no longer automatically issues plastic cards for the Codice Fiscale to everyone. Instead, you will receive a paper certificate with a bar code. Keep the original document safe and save a scanned digital copy on your phone!

🗺️ Feeling overwhelmed by Italian paperwork?

Getting your tax code is just the first step! Navigating visas, residency applications, and finding a place to live can get complicated quickly.
